What we collect directly

This site has no accounts, no comment form, no newsletter and no tracking script of our own. We do not ask for your name, and we do not set a cookie to recognise you.

If you send an email to [email protected], we receive your address and whatever you write. Those messages are kept for as long as they are useful for maintaining the site — typically the length of the exchange plus a year — and are never added to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list.

Server logs

The web server records standard access-log data for every request: the IP address, the date and time, the URL requested, the referring page if any, and the browser user-agent string. These logs exist for security and for capacity planning, are retained for a limited period, and are not used to build a profile of any individual reader. They are not combined with any other data set.

Cookies and advertising (Google AdSense)

This site is supported by advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. The cookie Google uses for this purpose is the DoubleClick DART cookie.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings at adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info, or in the EU by visiting youronlinechoices.eu. Opting out does not remove advertising; it makes the advertising less relevant.

Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also serve ads on this site, and those vendors may set their own cookies. We do not control those cookies. Where required by law, a consent message is shown before any non-essential cookie is set, and you can change or withdraw that consent at any time through the link in the message footer.

We do not run Google Analytics on this site, and no analytics identifier is embedded in these pages.

Your rights under the GDPR

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right to be informed about the processing described above; the right of access to any personal data we hold about you; the right to rectification of inaccurate data; the right to erasure; the right to restrict or object to processing; and the right to data portability.

The legal basis we rely on for the access logs described above is our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and available. The legal basis for advertising cookies is your consent, which you may withdraw at any time. Personal data is not sold, and it is not used for automated decision-making or profiling by us. Where data is transferred outside the EEA — for example to an advertising provider in the United States — the transfer relies on the safeguards published by that provider, including the standard contractual clauses.

To exercise any of these rights, write to [email protected]. We will respond within one month. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

Your rights under the CCPA

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and for what purpose; the right to request deletion of that information; the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights; and the right to correct inaccurate personal information.

We do not sell personal information for money. The categories of information involved in advertising on this site are identifiers (IP address, cookie identifiers) and internet activity (pages viewed), and they may be shared with advertising partners as described above. To opt out of that sharing, use the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in the consent message footer, or write to [email protected]. An authorised agent may submit a request on your behalf.

Children, retention and changes

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information to this site, write to [email protected] and it will be deleted.

Access logs are retained for the short period needed for security review and then discarded. Email correspondence is retained as described above.

If this policy changes materially, the revised version will be published on this page with a new "last updated" date. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised policy. Questions about any part of this policy should go to [email protected].
